Item Description
This item is a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1893, listed as Scott #59. The stamp is canceled with a Honoka`a, Hawai`i CDS listed in Meyer-Harris as type 282.016. This cancel has a rarity factor of 7 in the Meyer-Harris scale, which would equate to 1000-2000 thought or known to exist. This one is SON, with a clear date of 1 May 1894 in that order. This date order is a little unusual for Honoka`a, which typically had the order as Month / Day / Year. The history of the stamp is as follows:
This underlying stamp shows the portrait of King Kamehameha V, the final monarch of Hawai`i’s 600-year old Kamehameha dynasty until he died in 1872. This design was the only 5-cent stamp issued by the Kingdom’s post office with a portrait of a person. Others, particularly the 2-cent value, changed with the reigning monarch. When this design was first issued in 1866 in bluish-green (Scott #32), it paid the letter rate for letters sent to the United States, and following Hawai`i’s admission to the Universal Postal Union in 1882, it once again paid the basic UPU letter rate. The design was reissued in ultra (Scott #39) rather than bluish-green.
Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian government by the United States, the American-led government ordered the post office to overprint the stamps with the words "Provisional / GOVT. / 1893" and began to reissue them on 20 May 1893. This stamp was the "workhorse" value for international mail, paying the basic inter-UPU letter rate. All Hawaiian stamps, whether issued before or after the overthrow, remained valid 13 June 1900. The US Post Office would take over operations the following day, upon which the US Territory of Hawai`i was established.
