Item Description

The item in this listing is a single mint Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #58, and issued in 1890. THE STAMP IS MINT, NEVER HINGED, A CONDITION HAWAIIAN STAMPS ARE RARELY FOUND IN. Scott CV $32.00 Please see scan for details. It is also very well centered for a Hawaiian stamp, which are normally found in horribly centered condition.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of King Kamehameha V, the final monarch of Hawai`i’s 600-year old Kamehameha dynasty until he died in 1872. This design was the only 5-cent stamp issued by the Kingdom’s post office with a portrait of a person—other values, particularly the 2-cent value, changed with the reigning monarch. When this design was first issued in 1866 in blue (Scott #32), it paid the letter rate for letters sent to the United States, but was obsolete by 1871 and withdrawn. Following Hawai`i’s admission to the Universal Postal Union in 1882, it once again paid the basic international rate and was reprinted in ultra (Scott #39) and issued in quantity. A small printing of Scott #52C, the unoverprinted version of this stamp, was printed in 1884 but not issued until 1890. It is believed to have been an attempt to recreate the darker shade of Scott #32, but is quite distinct. Scott #52C, was issued in part due to the Hawaiian post office’s desire to be accomodating to philatelists, and keep stocks of obsolete denominations and/or colours on hand.

Please e-mail for quotes on shipping if purchasing more than six items! Uninsured shipments sent at buyer's risk. This means that if you choose to forgo insurance, you agree to release me from any future claim via paypal if it should be lost in the mail.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)
