Item Description
The stamp in this listing is a used example of Scott #57, a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1893. It is typically centered for a Hawaiian stamp, and has a very heavy overprint, as well as two uncommon printing varieties. The overprint is shifted up about half an inch (1.25 cm) so that it printed across the vignette’s face in the middle of the stamp. The overprint was supposed to print across bottom 1/3 of the stamp instead. This is known as a "HIGH FLOATING OVERPRINT" variety.Additionally, this stamp shows the word “York” from the margin inscription “American Bank Note Company, New York” which was supposed to be printed on the selvage of the stamp, but instead was captured by the perforation comb being set too high. The word "York" appears on the top left corner of the stamp. This is varitey sometimes called a “MARGIN INSCRIPTION CAPTURE” variety.
This stamp was postally used at the Honolulu post office sometime in late 1896 or early 1897. This can be determined even owing to the lack of any part of the date. The cancel on this stamp is an example of Honolulu 231.82, applied in purple ink. This is only known to have been done during the time period mentioned above. Applied in purple ink, this cancel has a rarity factor of 5 (250-500 KNOWN EXAMPLES). When applied in black ink, this cancel is a much more common 10 (5000+ examples) and is arguably one of the two most common Hawaiian cancels from the end of the 19th century.
Please see scan for details.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
The unoverprinted version of this stamp, Scott #52, shows the portrait of Her Majesty Queen Lili`uokalani, the last reigning monarch of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This stamp was issued in late 1891, the year the Queen began her short reign. This stamp was issued to be the post office’s main definitive as it showed the portrait of the reigning monarch, and it paid the basic domestic postage rate.
Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Royal government by the United States on 17 January 1893, a group of mostly American citizens in Honolulu set up a government seeking annexation to the United States. The new government applied the “Provisional / GOVT. / 1893” overprints to existing stamps to make them more politically correct, and reissued them starting in May of 1893.
