Item Description

The item in this listing is a single mint Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #55, and issued in 1893. The stamp is mint, hinged, and is very well centered for this issue. CV $2.00

Please note that this stamp does have some disturbed gum from a removed hinge. It does not appear to be thinned, but this is possible in the area under the existing hinge remnant.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of Princess Miriam Likelike, a member of Hawai`i’s Royal Family. She was the sister of Hawai`i’s last two reigning monarchs, King Kalakaua (reigned 1874-1891) and Queen Lili`uokalani (r. 1891-1893). This 1-cent stamp was the primary one of that value in use when the Monarchy was overthrown by the United States on January 17, 1893, and was overprinted in Honolulu starting in May of that year to make it more politically correct.

The 1-cent value was used primarily to pay printed matter rates, as well as to pay the “drop” letter rate, for letters mailed at and delivered by a single post office. 1-cent would also pay the postal card rate when such cards were issued, and 1-cent stamps could be used in combination with other stamps to pay various rates.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)

Return Policy:

US Bidders: 14 days from the 3rd day after the item is sent.

International: 14 days from the 7th day after the item is sent.
