Item Description
The item in this listing is a single mint Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #53 and issued in 1893. The stamp is mint, hinged. The colour of this stamp is very deep for this issue, and the centering is better than typical for Hawaiian stamps. CV $9.00Please see scan for details.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian government by the United States on 17 January 1893, new stamps were not initially issued. Stamps with the "Provisional / GOVT. / 1893" were issued on 20 May 1893, and remained available for sale until the end of 1896. This particular stamp, the 1-cent purple with red overprint, was created primarily for sale to philatelists and was not universally available. Just 62,500 examples of this stamp (Scott #53) were issued.
The underlying stamp shows the portrait of Princess Victoria Kamamalu, the Kuhina Nui (Prime Minister) of the Kingdom of Hawai`i under Kings Kamehameha IV and V--who were also her brothers. She died in 1866, several years before this design was first issued in 1871. (The 1871 printing is listed in Scott as #30a, while another printing issued in 1878 is listed in Scott as #30b. Both have different shades of purple and gum for mint issues.) An 1886 printing, Scott #30, was issued in part due to the Hawaiian post office’s desire to be accomodating to philatelists. The 1-cent value had been replaced several years earlier but small printings of stamps with obsolete designs and/or colours were made throughout the 1880’s to provide examples of these stamps to collectors.
The 1-cent value was used primarily to pay printed matter rates, as well as to pay the “drop” letter rate, for letters mailed at and delivered by a single post office. 1-cent would also pay the postal card rate when such cards were issued, and 1-cent stamps could be used in combination with other stamps to pay various rates.
The 1893 overprinted issue was created by overprinting examples of the 1886 printing that the post office had on hand for sale to collectors.
