Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #45, and issued in 1883. CV $14.00. The centering is better than typical for Hawaiian stamps, but it has shortened perfs at lower left.

The cancellation is a four-circle target which itself is not dated, but which is known to have been used in 1888.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of King David Kalakaua (r. 1874-1891) and who was the last reigning King but not last reigning monarch of Hawai`i. .

The 10-cent value was used initially to pay for double weight letters sent to North America, and (in 1882), single-weight letters to European and Asian UPU members. It also paid for other services, such as the registration fee for items sent to any destination starting in 1882.

This earliest stamp of this design was issued in black, but it was quickly replaced by the same design in other colours, presumably for the same reason most countries do not issue black stamps. While designs of black stamps are very striking, cancels can be hard to see if not downright impossible. Stamps issued in vermillion replaced the black stamps in 1883, and again by a red-brown version in 1884. No further changes were made prior to the American-led revolution which overthrew the Hawaiian government in 1893.
