Item Description
The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #44, and issued in 1884.It has a light cancel applied nearly SON at the Waimea post office on the island of Kaua`i. Listed in Meyer-Harris as Waimea 238.02, this is a rarity 3 cancel, equating to between 76 and 150 examples thought or known to exist. The word "Post" from this cancel printed across the King's face, while "WAIM" from the town name is visible across the bottom edge and to the right side of the stamp. The year of the cancel, 1885, also printed just below the King's right shoulder.
The history of the stamp is as follows:
This stamp shows the portrait of King David Kalakaua (r. 1874-1891) and who was the last reigning King but not last reigning monarch of Hawai`i. .
The 10-cent value was used primarily to pay for double weight letters sent to the United States and other members of the UPU. It also paid for other services, such as the registration fee for items sent anywhere from 1882 on. It also paid for a special “late letter” fee in the mid-1880’s but those have different cancels than the one that appears on this one.
Stamps with this design were first issued in 1882 as Scott #40. Scott #40 was printed in black ink, and was presumably deemed unsuitable. It was replaced by a vermillion version (Scott #45) in 1883, and ultimately by this one (#44) in 1884. No further changes were made until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
