Item Description
This item is a Hawaiian stamp listed in Scott as #43 (issued in 1884.)This stamp has a dated strike of a type 282.013 cancel applied on the island of Kaua`i. There are only 2 possibilities for this cancel on the date it was applied (July 22 1887)--Hanalei 282.013 and Kapa`a 282.013. Based on the appearance of the cancel--specifically that no part of the town name is visible in this strike--it is far more likely to be the much rarer Hanalei cancel. (On the Kapa`a cancel, the bottom of the third letter "A" is usually visible where the top of the date prints; on the Hanalei cancel, the right side of the town name is not visible in this area.) However, it can't be determined with certainty which town's cancel this is.
Hanalei 282.013 is a very uncommon 1R on the Meyer-Harris rarity scale, with fewer than 30 examples thought or known to exist. The Kapa`a 282.013 cancel is a much more common "7".
The history of the stamp is as follows:
Stamps using this design were first issued in 1875, and are listed in Scott as #35. Scott #35, however, is a dark brown in colour, whereas #43a was issued in dull red in 1883, and only one printing of 50,000 was created. Scott #35 and #43a were both issued in large quantities, and each was the primary “workhorse” definitive stamp of its’ day, paying the standard domestic postage rate from its’ date of issue until the end of Hawaiian postal independence in June of 1900. Why the colour was changed is unclear, but two other stamps of this design were issued--#38 (“lilac rose”) in 1882, and #43 (“carmine rose”) in 1884. The lilac rose and dull red shades were for whatever reason unsuitable. The carmine rose shade would be the primary shade issued until 1891. Other stamps from the early 1880’s show similar colour changes, indicating that the post office was searching for some sort of suitable mix of colours or something similar.
