Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp listed in Scott as #40, and issued in 1882. It has a partial strike of a circular town date stamp, which I believe to be a Meyer-Harris type 282.011 cancel applied at the Laupahoehoe post office on the island of Hawai`i. This stamp is an excellent example of why black stamps aren't issued; black or even purple cancels don't show up well on them.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of King David Kalakaua (r. 1874-1891) and who was the last reigning King but not last reigning monarch of Hawai`i. .

The 10-cent value was used primarily to pay for double weight letters sent to North America, and at the time of issue, single-weight letters to European and Asian UPU members. It also paid for other services, such as the registration fee for items sent to any destination starting in 1882. It also paid for a special “late letter” fee in the mid-1880’s but those have different cancels than the one that appears on this one.

This stamp is the earliest one issued in this design, but it was quickly replaced by the same design in other colours. Scott #40 was printed in black ink, and was presumably deemed unsuitable as cancels on black stamps are hard to see&mdashthus making it easier to reuse such stamps. (This is the same reason the British “penny black” was printed in that colour for the first year only.) Scott #40 was replaced by a vermillion version (Scott #45) in 1883, and ultimately by a red-brown version (#44) in 1884. No further changes were made until the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893.
