Item Description

This item is a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1882, listed as Scott #39. The stamp is canceled with a two circle target cancel used specifically during a period in 1885 and only to mail which was assessed a special "Late Letter" fee of 10 cents or which was sent registered. The specific period when this was known to have been used is the January - July 1885. This is also the period when the previously mentioned "Late Letter" fee of 10 cents was assessed. This fee is believed to have been charge not as a source of revenue

This cancel is not described in Meyer-Harris, but is described using the "Shaffer" system known to most Hawaiian collectors. This cancel is an example of Shaffer 2-130, which has even rings measuring about 19mm in diameter and lacks any central dot.

This cancel has an assigned rarity factor of "2" which equates to between 30 and 75 examples thought or known to exist.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of King Kamehameha V, the final monarch of Hawai`i’s 600-year old Kamehameha dynasty until he died in 1872. This design was the only 5-cent stamp issued by the Kingdom’s post office with a portrait of a person—other values, particularly the 2-cent value, changed with the reigning monarch. When this design was first issued in 1866 in bluish-green (Scott #32), it paid the letter rate for letters sent to the United States, and following Hawai`i’s admission to the Universal Postal Union in 1882, it once again paid the basic UPU letter rate. The design was reissued in ultra (Scott #39) rather than bluish-green.
