Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp, listed in Scott as #38, and issued in 1882. This one has a target cancel, and a partial type 238.02 cancel from a neighbour island post office (probably Kawaihae, HI.)

This one does have a small piece missing from the upper left corner. Please see scan for details.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Stamps using this design were first issued in 1875, and are listed in Scott as #35. This stamp was the “domestic work horse” of the Hawaiian postal system until the early 1880’s, paying the domestic letter rate from 1875 until 1900. It was replaced stamp of the same design starting in 1882, i.e. this stamp. For reasons uncertain, this shade of pink was deemed unacceptable and was changed to a dull red (#43a) in 1883, and finally to carmine rose (#43) in 1884. The carmine rose version is very common, but the other two had print runs of just 50,000 each. Multiples are known used to pay for heavier mailings, and as international postage.

This means that if you choose to forgo insurance, you agree to release me from any future claim via paypal if it should be lost in the mail.

Payment Options:

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)

Return Policy:

US Bidders: 14 days from the 3rd day after the item is sent.

International: 14 days from the 7th day after the item is sent.
