Item Description

The stamp in this listing is one, Mint Never Hinged (MNH) example of Scott #37, a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1882. this one has the attached selvage at left and one blind perf. There does appear to be a small fragment of a hinge remnant--but if that it is what it is, it is found on the selvage not on the stamp.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Unoverprinted stamps of this design were first issued in blue in 1882 as Scott #37. A green version, Scott #42, followed in 1883. This denomination paid the "drop" letter rate for letters mailed at and delivered in the area served by one post office, and also some printed matter rates from the time of issue until the end of Hawaiian postal independence on 13 June 1900. The portrait shows Her Royal Highness Princess Likelike, sister of King Kalakaua and Queen Lili`uokalani.

Following the legally questionable overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom on January 17, 1893, the Hawaiian post office at first issued provisionally overprinted stamps. The overprinting was done to make the stamps more politically correct, as stamps of the Monarchy showed members of the royal family.

Paypal, Money Orders, and Checks payable in the US are accepted. Credit cards accepted through paypal only. Checks must be drawn on a US bank, or I cannot cash them! (I can no longer accept Canadian Postal Money Orders, even those in US dollars-sorry!)
