Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used Hawaiian postage stamp, on piece, listed in Scott as #35, and issued in 1875. The stamp is used, with a nearly SON example of a cancel listed in Meyer-Harris as Honolulu type 115, which is a three-ring circular cancel with three dots in the center.

Additionally MEYER-HARRIS TYPE 115 IS A RARITY 2 CANCEL, MEANING THAT BETWEEN 31 AND 75 EXAMPLES ARE THOUGHT OR KNOWN TO EXIST. The cancelling device was in use for about 20 years, but only during a few months in 1876 did the three pins punch through the paper of the stamp as happened here.

The stamp is also consistent with this early usage: the shading at the top of the frame is known to have printed in this fashion on the earliest printing of this stamp (Scott #35) which was issued in 1875.

The stamp also has what appears to be a circular cancel of eight wedges of a type known to have been used at the US Post Office in San Francisco, California. Described as Meyer-Harris 52, this marking is sometimes found on Hawaiian stamps used between the 1860's and 1880's, as most foreign mail from Hawai`i would have passed through San Francisco.

The history of the stamp is as follows:

Stamps using this design were first issued in 1875, and are listed in Scott as #35. This stamp was the “domestic work horse” of the Hawaiian postal system until the early 1880’s, paying the domestic letter rate from 1875 until 1900. It was replaced by a stamp of the same design starting in 1882, but continued to be available from the Honolulu post office as a philatelic item until the early 1890’s. Multiples are known used to pay for heavier mailings, and as international postage.
