Item Description

This item is a Hawaiian stamp issued in 1866, listed as Scott #32. The stamp is cancelled with a very light cancel. CV$30.00 for used. This example has very clear layout lines on top edge of the stamp that are the typical features of this stamp. This stamp can be identified as being part of the 1866 printing; this printing was made from poorly wiped plates, which created stamps which appeared to be printed on bluish paper. This stamp does show this feature.

It is also cancelled with a small oval cancel with the letters "HI" in the centre. It is described in Meyer-Harris as type 151, and is a relatively common scarcity 8 on the Meyer-Harris scale. (2,000-3,000 examples thought or known to exist.)

The history of the stamp is as follows:

This stamp shows the portrait of King Kamehameha V, the final monarch of Hawai`i’s 600-year old Kamehameha dynasty until he died in 1872. This design was the only 5-cent stamp issued by the Kingdom’s post office with a portrait of a person--other values, particularly the 2-cent value, changed with the reigning monarch. When this design was first issued in 1866 in bluish-green (Scott #32), it paid the letter rate for letters sent to the United States specifically. Although withdrawn from sale in 1871, stocks remained stored at the Honolulu post office and were placed on sale again in 1882, following Hawai`i’s admission to the Universal Postal Union, at which time it paid the UPU letter rate.
