Item Description
Well-known (he was nationally recognized as an expert on the Trans-Mississippi issue, Flag Cancels, and Chicago Trolley postmarks!) and beloved (he was a member of our stamp club since its inception) the late philatelist Frederick Langford celebrated his 94th birthday in 2010 with his Ries Chapter friends and admirers throwing him a party with his favorite food = Kentucky Fried Chicken!Frederick had an amazingly encyclopedic memory of the dates of issue of nearly every US stamp, for 20 years he hosted the Summer BBQ Party of the Ries Chapter of the AFDCS, and he was always joyfully proud to show bits and pieces of his mammoth FDC collection!
This color-photocopied cachet shows Frederick and his trademark long white ponytail decked out in an evergreen outfit, holding his pine cone-topped birthday cake in concordance with the Evergreen stamp franking. The cover was cancelled at his local Post Office (just three blocks from his home where the party took place) on his birthday of October 23, 2010, and was given out to all the attendees.
Sadly, Frederick passed away less then a year after this event . . but we will always remember him as the quintessential 'grandfatherly' stamp collector, mentor and friend!
