Item Description
October 4th, 2022 marked the 200th anniversary of Rutherford B. Hayes, possibly our greatest president [and with whom I share a birthdate! :o) ] I had been looking forward to this date for years, anticipating some worthy observations of this important milestone by the USPS -- certainly a single stamp, but possibly a souvenir sheet with multiple stamps saluting his many achievements and the noble and respected way he guided this country following the tragedies of the Civil War.Alas, the USPS ignored this monumental event.
In fact, the only commemorations offered by the postal service were two pictorial cancels used by the post office in Hayes' later hometown of Fremont, Ohio, and now home to the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library.
Here is my effort to dignify the occasion - with President Hayes casually leaning on his large birthday cake. The pictorial postmark featuring a portrait drawing of our 19th president neatly cancels the 1922 11¢ issue (issued on the Centennial of his birth), the 19¢ single from the Prexy series of 1939, and a Happy Birthday single from 2021.
