Item Description
The theme for EUROPA issues in 1997 was 'Myths and Legends' from a country's storytelling heritage. Greenland chose to illustrate the Native Inuit legend of 'The Bear and the Sea', which retells the story of an encounter an Inuit hunter had with a 60-foot tall Polar Bear that he accidentally released from under the sea ice.This handcolored FDC shows the rather docile giant Polar Bear licking an uprooted fir tree like a posicle, as the tiny hunter in his canoe looks on in astonishment.
The cover 'bears' a pair of the 4.75DKK stamp with an engraved vignette of the massive polar bear looming over the escaping hunter in his canoe. Two nice strikes are present of the official Greenland First Day of Issue cancel of May 5, 1997 that shows the Inuit hand symbol for 'polar bear'.
The reverse carries the Puffin Cachets logo and shows that this is cover #1 of only 6 sent to Greenland for servicing!
