Item Description
The people of Greenland - where most of the population is descended from long lines of hunters and fishermen - depend on the sea for a huge part of their diet. Whales are revered for their gift of sustenance to the arctic inhabitants.Greenland chose to celebrate these giant denizens of the ocean by depicting 18 different species, over the course of four years, on naturallisticly depicted souvenir sheets. Here is the second issue in the series, with single stamps depicting the Blue Whale, the Fin Whale, the Sei Whale, and the popular Narwhal, all on a FDC with a handcolored cachet depicting a happy whale breaching in front of the Greenland flag. The cover has two nice strikes of Greenland's official pictorial First Day of Issue cancel of May 5, 1997.
The reverse shows that this is cover #1 of only 6 sent to Greenland for servicing!
