Item Description
Rattlesnake Island, which lies 11 miles off of Ohio's Lake Erie coast, for many years had one of only a handful of USPS-sanctioned Local Posts. Mail to the few year-round inhabitants, and seasonal visitors, of the island was franked with stamps created by the Rattlesnake Island Local Post and flown, for many years, to the tiny island by an old Ford Tri-Motor dubbed 'The Tin Goose'.More recent years saw an aircraft upgrade to a Britten Norman jet-prop plane which took island mail to and from either Sandusky, or Port Clinton, Ohio.
This cover marks the return of the Rattlesnake Island Local Post in 2005 after a 16-year hiatus. The RILP stamps have always been triangular in format to distinguish them from USPS issues, and these 3 new 2005 issues, in the denominations of 25¢, 50¢ and $1, picture views of different parts of the small 85-acre island.
The cachet shows a rattlesnake - a giant one! - rising up from an aerial view of the island, with its small harbor and large guest house, in an attempt to strike at the red and white Britten Norman carrying the mail!
The cover bears a single of the Reptiles and Amphibians issue showing a Scarlet Kingsnake. It was postmarked in Sandusky, OH on September 23, 2005 - the first day of resumed RILP service. The three RILP stamps are cancelled on the same date with the traditional RILP diamond lozenge-shaped cancel.
The reverse received a strike of the small RILP rubber stamp indicator of flown mail. Only 20 of these FDCs were created . . and this is the last one in the artist's archives!
