In the 1937 state visit of Mussolini to Germany, Hitler was the dominant figure. He wished to cement the Berlin-Rome axis, and pave his way for the annexation ofAustria. Pictured special postmark commemorating the event. It was issued in Munich on 25 September.Not concerned with diplomatic conversations, Hitler wished to impress Mussolini with Germany's strength, and to convince him to cast his lot with Germany. The Duce was rushed from one side of Germany to the other, to parades of the SS and the troops, army maneuvers in Mecklenburg, and roaring armament factories in the Ruhr. His visit climaxed on 28 September when a crowd of one million gathered on the Maifeld to hear the two dictators speak. Mussolini, orating in German, was carried away by the deafening applause and by Hitler's flattering words.
