Item Description

The cover in this listing is a cover mailed on board a ship of the Ost-Asiatische Hauptlinie to the USA in 1908 as per the cancel on the cover. Ships at this time had post offices on board, and had distinctive cancels for this purpose. They also carried stamps, usually of the country the ship came from, but there were other situations when stamps of other countries might be used.

This cover also has a partial Nagasaki cancel cancel, dated in September 1908, applied as a transit cancel on the back of the envelope. There is also evidence that this envelope was printed in the United States as per an embossed "B. Altman & Co., New York" maker's mark on the back. A cancel date in 1908, combined with the index letter "c" indicates use aboard the Prinz Ludwig, to which the c cancel device was assigned.

All of these details suggest that the envelope was mailed somewhere in East Asia, likely in the area between , as the ship was headed to the east. Nagasaki is a typical transit cancel from this period for mail headed from East Asia to the United States. Nagasaki was the eastern terminus of this line.
