Item Description

The card in this listing is a picture post card showing "Bettelweiber" (literally Beggars) in Wuhu, China.

The card was postmarked by Naval Post Ofice No. 38 on the 7th of November 1904, as shown in the scan. On the date in question, Naval PO #38 was assigned to the SMS "Thetis".

The card was datelined in Hankow, China, and delivered in Tsingtau, Kiautschou on 23 January 1905. The extended travel time was due to the card making the trip via Berlin, where it received a transit cancel on 14 December 1904.

As was the case with all military forces in 1904 (and now) military post offices operated in German ships at the beginning of the 20th century. The cancel devices issued to those military post offices read "Kais.(erlich) Deutsche / Marine- / Schiffspost/ No. ____" with an identifying number. (This inscription means "Imperial German Navy Ship Post.") Members of the military had the right to use the military mails for free, but Military PO's carried some stamps on board for situations not covered by the military mail. Presumably mail sent to Kiautschou rather than Germany was one of these situations.
