Item Description

This listing is for a single, mint definitive stamps issued for use in the German colony of Togo in 1900 and printed on unwatermarked paper. It shows the standard image used on colonial German stamps in the early 20th century, namely the Kaiser’s Yacht “Hohenzollern.”

The stamp is listed in Scott as #10, and has a face value of 20 pfennig. It is mint, and has a hinge mark on the reverse.

Togo was a colony of Imperial Germany from 1884 until Germany lost all her colonies as part of the peace settlement that ended World War I. At the start of the War, Togo was invaded by a combined British and French expeditionary force, and occupied in its' entirety by the 26th of August 1914.

The German colony of Togo was about 50% larger than the modern nation of that name. The modern Togolese Republic is comprised of the area occupied by France in 1914, and gained independence in 1960. The remainder of the former German colony was absorbed by the British colony of Gold Coast, and gained independence as part of Ghana in 1957.
