Item Description

This listing is for a postal card mailed from Apia, Samoa, using a "Forerunner" 5 pf stamp. This is a picture postcard, with one black / white image of an Apia street and another of Samoan warriors.

The term "Forerunner" is a term for a stamp issued by one country used somewhere else, specifically prior to distinctive issues for that area. In this case, the 5 pfennig stamp on this postal card was printed for use in Germany but was actually used on a postcard mailed from Apia, Samoa, after the establishment of a German post office there but before a German colony was officially established there and before German stamps overprinted "SAMOA" were issued.

This one has an Imperial German Postal Agency CDS from Apia dated 28 December 1899, and a receiving cancel from Cöslin (now Koszalin, Poland) dated 25 January 1900.

PLEASE NOTE: The stamp on this card does not appear to have faults. However, the card has a tear about 1 cm in length at the left edge (seen from the front) and a bend in the upper left corner. CV of €90

German Samoa was a colony of Imperial Germany from 1900 until Germany lost all her colonies as part of the peace settlement that ended World War I.  Following an invasion of German Samoa by British and New Zealand forces, the colony was mandated to Great Britain (and later New Zealand), a mandate which lasted until 1962.  The former colony then gained independence as Western Samoa, and is now known as the Independent State of Samoa.
