Item Description

The item in this listing is for an entire postal card listed in Michel as Mi P8, a postal card printed for domestic use (i.e. to Germany or to any other point in the German colonial empire). This has a 5 pf imprinted stamp similar to that listed in both Scott and Michel as #8, and showing the Kaiser's Yacht.

This example was mailed from Finchhafen--a town which still has this name to the present day--on 31 December 1908 to someone who worked with gold (a Goldarbeiten or "Gold Worker") in Lauf by Nuremberg, Bavaria. There is a lengthy message on the back.

German New Guinea included the north-eastern quarter of the island of New Guinea and a number of islands in the Pacific off of that portion of New Guinea.  Founded in 1884 as a "protectorate," this colony ended up being the administrative center of all Germany's Pacific colonies except for Kiautschou.  Falling to Allied forces in 1914, German New Guinea was renamed "the Territory of New Guinea."  It would merge with a separate British colony, Papua, to form the modern nation of Papua New Guinea which achieved independence in 1971.
