Item Description

The item in this listing is a single used postage stamp issued for use in the German crown colony of German New Guinea ("Deutsch Neu Guinea") in 1901. 2020 CV $3.00

Listed in Scott as #9, the stamp has a face value of 10 pfennig and was cancelled at the Simpsonhafen Post Office on 18 May 1908. It was the colonial capital city at the time.

German New Guinea included the north-eastern quarter of the island of New Guinea and a number of islands in the Pacific off of that portion of New Guinea. Founded in 1884 as a "protectorate," this colony ended up being the administrative center of all Germany's Pacific colonies except for Kiautschou. Falling to Allied forces in 1914, German New Guinea was renamed "the Territory of New Guinea." It would merge with a separate British colony, Papua, to form the modern nation of Papua New Guinea which achieved independence in 1971.
