Item Description

The item in this listing is a set of three (3) hinged postage stamp issued for use in the German crown colony of German New Guinea ("Deutsch Neu Guinea") between 1914 and 1919. 2020 CV $5.25

Listed in Scott as #20-22, these stamps were printed on watermarked paper during the First World War. Germany had, by this time, lost control of the colony. These stamps were never sold in the colony, only at the Berlin philatelic counter. For this reason, they cannot exist legitimately used.

German New Guinea included the north-eastern quarter of the island of New Guinea and a number of islands in the Pacific off of that portion of New Guinea. Founded in 1884 as a "protectorate," this colony ended up being the administrative center of all Germany's Pacific colonies except for Kiautschou. Falling to Allied forces in 1914, German New Guinea was renamed "the Territory of New Guinea." It would merge with a separate British colony, Papua, to form the modern nation of Papua New Guinea which achieved independence in 1971.
