Item Description

This listing is for a single, mint lightly hinged definitive stamps issued for use in the German colony of the Marshall Islands in 1916.

The stamp is listed in Scott as #272, and has a face value of 5 marks, the high value of the definitive series. Printed on paper watermarked with diamond lozenges (Scott Watermark #125, Michel Wz 1), this stamp was printed after Germany had lost control of the colony but in the middle of World War I. It was printed in anticipation that Germany would win the war--or at least regain control of the colony--but as that never happened, the stamp was never placed in use in the colony. It was, however, sold at the Philatelic counter of Berlin's central post office. 2021 CV $35.00

The Marshall Islands were one of the first German colonies established in the Pacific, with a German presence dating to 1885. The colony was invaded by Japan during the First World War, and would later become part of the UN Trust Territory of the Pacific. Since 1986, the former colony has been independent as the Republic of the Marshall Islands.
