Item Description

This listing is for a single, used definitive stamps issued for use in the colony of German East Africa (Deutsch Ostafrika) in 1900, and shows the standard image used on colonial German stamps in the early 20th century&mdashnamely the Kaiser’s Yacht “Hohenzollern.”

The stamp is listed in Scott as #12, and has a face value of 3 pesa. It has a fairly clear, SON cancel applied at the Dar Es Salaam post office on the 28th of October 1905, a fairly late usage--the stamp was demonetized on 31 March 1906. DES was the colonial capitol of German East Africa, and remained the capitol of its' sucessor states (Tangyanika and Tanzania) until Tanzania moved the capitol to Dodoma in 1996. Scott CV $2, with an additional value of €5 for the cancel.

German East Africa was a colony of Germany until Germany lost all her colonies as part of the peace settlement that ended World War I. Britain took over the majority of the colony, which would become known as Tanganyika (now the mainland portion of Tanzania). Belgium took over what would later become Rwanda and Burundi, and Portugal also incorporated a small piece of the former DOA into Mozambique.
