This listing is for a 5 pf, Mint hinged stamp issued for use in the German Carolne Islands (Karolinen). Listed in Scott as #8,.

The Caroline Islands, formerly the Spanish possession of the "Eastern Philippines" was sold to Germany in 1899, and was one of their last colonies to be founded. The Carolines remained German until 1914, when Japan invaded and took over during the First World War. After first being a League of Nations Mandate, and later an integral part of the Japanese Empire, the Carolines were ceded to the US in the form of a UN Trust Territory Mandate. This ended in stages between 1984 and 1994, when the former German/Japanese colony gained independence as the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau.
