Condition:VERY Rare postcard piece franked with the "PONAPE Provisional" INVERTED surcharged stamp 5pf /3pf brown. On 2 July 1910, the German East Asian Cruiser Squadron and two auxiliary vessels unexpectedly arrive at Ponape, remaining there until 7 July. During that short period, Ponape’s supply of 5- and 10-Pfennig stamps was exhausted. To fill the void, the Ponape postal administrator used a variety of provisionals, including the Caroline 3-pfennig Yachts surcharged “5 Pf.” . Estimates place the number of surcharged stamps produced at 500. These were ONLY used for one day, 12 July 1910. Two variations exist, with just a few examples known: an inverted and a double surcharge. Excellent condition and an item full of charm.
