FRANKLIN INSTITUTE DOCUMENT Re STAMP AUTOMATS (Coil Vending Machines): 8.5" x 11" sheet of bond paper, folded twice with flaws on folds, letterhead for the Franklin Institute, given on the day of the installation of the Stamp-Automat in Philadelphia, five 1c coils were affixed and signed by the Postmaster, unfortunately THREE OF THEM HAVE FALLEN OFF AND ARE GONE PERMANENTLY, they were signed by the Philadelphia postmaster Joseph F Gallagher but only "Jos F' remains, these stamps were among the first dispensed by this advanced coil machine, The Institute apparently had a hand in designing these machines about which little information can be found today. They were developed to stop the use of slugs and dispensed coils in strips of five. Apparently a big deal in 1938, the ceremony was atended by many big-wigs including stamp dealer Philip h Ward, Jr (he represented the APS), some edge or tape flaws, obviously the document has not been well preserved but I think with more research the machine may prove to be more interesting, needs study, Fine-VF!
