Item Description

- 1940, 1 July. Definitive stamps: French stamps with three-line hand stamped overprint "Besetztes / Gebiet / Nordfrankreich" inside frame lines, sometimes extending over 2 stamps.

- Type II (Coudekerque-Branche): frame with sharp corners

- This issue in both types was ordered for the provisional civil postal service (1 July - 9 Aug. 1940) by the German Military Commander in Dunkirk. Because the only available hand stamps were larger than the regular postage stamps, the hand stamp overprint was stamped on two stamps together either in vertical or horizontal pairs and made available in those pairs at the post offices. The overprint was accompanied by the place postmark.

- Since the deliveries and the on-hand supplies of postage stamps were insufficient, in order to maintain smooth postal service some postal officials had stamps other than stamp pairs than those listed as MiNr. 1-3 overprinted.
