Item Description
"Art from National Collections" was the SEPAC (the 'SMALL EUROPEAN POSTAL ADMINISTRATION COOPERATION' of 14 European Nations) OMNIBUS topic for member countries in 2020, and The Faroes decided to picture on their issue a watercolor piece of artwork from 1840 titled "Moon Pigeons"This fanciful representation of 17 colorfully rendered birds, drawn and painted on a large sheet of paper by Dídrikur Skarvanesi, seems to be a mystery as to why it was labeled "Moon Pigeons". There is no such bird in the Faroes Islands. It has long been a favorite at the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn.
The Faroes issued this 20Kr ($3.20) stamp during the COVID 19 lockdowns and it was difficult to purchase and have serviced when all US mail to the Faroes was suspended for lack of transportation due to the pandemic situation!
The cachet shows the PUFFIN CACHETS mascot on his Tórshavn Park bench feeding multicolored popcorn from a box of 'Rainbow Pigeon Food' to a small flock of hungry "Moon Pigeons" !
This FDC received two nice strikes of the official pictorial First Day of Issue cancel of April 27 that shows one of the 'Moon Pigeons'. The reverse has the PUFFIN CACHETS logo (with the mascot sporting 'Moon Pigeon' body art) and the designation that this is cover #3 of only 15 made.
