Item Description

This listing is for a single, used stamp issued by the then-Empire of Ethiopia on 5 May 1962. It shows the portrait of Emperor Haile Selassie, as well as a member of a bird species referred to as a Didric Cuckoo. This one, with a face value of 1 Ethiopian birr (shown as E$1) is the high value of a set of five such stamps. CV $2.00

The stamp is postally used, with a very light cancel in the upper right corner.

Ethiopia is the only country in Africa never colonized nor established by the Western powers during the 19th century "Scramble for Africa." Only one other country, Liberia, can claim never to have been a Western colony, although that country was established by the United States as a place to "repatriate" former slaves in 1847. Ethiopia was a monarchy until 1974, when the royalist government was overthrown by a Communist-backed coup. Today, Ethiopia is a federal republic.

US Bidders: 14 days from the 3rd day after the item is sent.

International: 14 days from the 7th day after the item is sent.
