Item Description

The invitation is approximately 4" x 6.25"; the envelope 4.25" x 2.5".

This handwritten invitation for a "Military Cotillion Party" at the "Concert Hall, over Messers Sword & Clay's new store / on Tuesday evening, the 25th inst." is enclosed in its original envelope addressed to "Miss Mary Seward / Present". It bears no postal markings or indication of the city, however, an ink annotation on the invitation reads "Independence / June the 24th 1861" and a pencil annotation of the reverse of the envelope reads, "Independence, Virginia." No doubt, this was hand-delivered.
