Item Description

This letter to a female American missionary in Peking (Beijing) China from a young man at a tent site in Yosemite is written on "Camp Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley, California" stationery dated 5 September 1909. It was mailed in a matching envelope franked with three 1-cent Franklin stamps. It bears a Peking receiving handstamp dated November 2, 1909.

The letter reads in part "The streams are full and sound their makers praise in wonderful tones. I have marked our tent site. Shall I engage it for you in 1910 or 1911? . . . America and the world are rich for such a park. . .. The table here is of the best. I went to the kitchen just now . . . and discovered one of the reasons for it. The cooks are all Chinese. . .. Tomorrow we are of for the big Trees. . .."
