Item Description

This is a very nice Connecticut November 1, 1886, postal cover to Canaan mailed from Winsted. The cover is clean and features the Scott #210 2-cent red brown Washington large banknote issue.  Reduced very little, the CDS is crisp while the killer cancellation strike seems to have safeguarded the back of George Washington's head.  

Both Connecticut towns are located in the upper northwest corner of the state near the New York state line, and the two townships are only about 20 miles distant one from another.  Settled in 1750, Winsted was formed at the junction of the Mad River and Still River, and was one of the first mill towns in Connecticut. The Winsted Post Office opened for public service on June 6, 1849.
