Item Description

Ophirville (Placer County) CAL large red city-date stamped postmark with a manuscript "March 8" in blue ink added for mailing by the local postal clerk.  The cover, posted to San Francisco, features franking with an 1851 3-cent dul red lower right margin stamp likely initialled/cancelled by the same postal clerk. The Ophirville Post Office was in operation from 1852 to 1866, and the cancellation is referred to as PLA-2840/5... not a common origination.  {For new cover collectors, the PLA-2840 identifies the cancellation while the 5 is the rarity factor.}

This is a nice piece of early California postal history and in really good condition.  The reverse flap was apparently damaged a bit in the recipient's eagerness to open the correspondence, but nothing beyond the oridnary.

The scarcity index for Ophirville puts the auction value for the cover between $150 to $200.  Please study the images to determine condition as well as clarity, color, condition, cancel, and centering. Note, the reverse features pencil notations from a previous collector.
