Item Description
Mount Ophir (Mariposa County) CAL blue city-date stamped postmark with a manuscript "May 13" in darker ink added for mailing by the local postal clerk. The Civil War era Union patriotic cover, posted to an unknown destination, features franking with an 1861 1-cent blue Franklin and two 3-cent Washington issues -- all three featuring simple penstroke cancellations. The Mount Ophir Post Office was in operation from November 1856 to June 1868, and the cancellation is referred to as MAR-1920/4... not a common origination. {For new cover collectors, the MAR-1920 identifies the cancellation while the 4 is the rarity factor.}This is a nice piece American Patriotic Civil War Era early California postal history and in really good condition. The cover was reduced by roughly one inch at some time in history, which means a 3-cent stamp was also cut away as the rate was 10 cents for mail transcontinent at the time. Despite the reduction, the cover has strong eye appeal.
Please review the images of this patriotic philatelic California cover. The scarcity index for Ophir puts the auction value for the cover between $250 to $350. Please study the images to determine condition as well as clarity, color, condition, cancel, and centering. Note, the reverse features pencil notations from a previous collector.
Usage/Issue Date: Early 1860s.
Faults/Flaws: None.
