Item Description
These are the two Byrd special printing blocks now at auction here. The stamp blocks are post office fresh, yet both are also no gum as originally issued. The reverse sides are clean and without any marking or other imperfections (please see the images). The Scott #753 block has the horizontal line between upper and lower stamps, which is really the only avenue for identifying with certainty tht it is the #753 and not the earlier #733, which was the identical design but issued with gum and no guidelines on the sheets.
The #768 crossed gutter block is from the special printing ordered after Postmaster James Farley's gifted of imperforate 1934 sheets to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, himself a lifelong philatelist. News of Farley's gift, which unintentionally created an immediate rarity, touched off a firestorm of angry collectors around the nation. Bowing to customer demand, the United States Post Office Department reprinted the imperforates for sale to the public, which is why they are available today at fairly reasonable rates.
But it gets better, the U.S. Post Office Department sold the issues without gum. Collectors then had the choice, they could keep their prized additions as they were issued -- without gum, or once piurchase send them back to the USPD for gumming. There apparently were enough gum enthusiasts that Scott editor's allow for a real premium on the gummed never hinged varieties. To the lot at hand...
