Item Description
This is the 1935 matched set of corner sheet blocks of Byrd special printing stamps now for sale. The issue can normally only be positively differentiated from the gummed #733 by the lines through pairs and blocks, or (AND THIS IS KEY) if the sheet owner breaks up the sheet as is the case here (the larger lined blocks sold earlier this year). Issued without gum, the stamps are still never hinged. The blocks are truly Post Office fresh. This stamps were the result of Postmaster James Farley's order for a special printing following an uproar by collectors over his gift of imperforate sheets to President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Interestingly enough, the U.S. Postal Department issued the stamps without gum, yet allowed collectors to buy from local post offices and then send them in for gumming, if desired, at no additional cost. Obviously, this sheet/set of blocks were kept as issued.
Please study the image for clarity, color, condition, and centering.
