Item Description

This is a nice piece Haywood, Alameda County, California, postal history featuring the 1861 10c Washington in the upper right corner cancelled by three manuscript ink strokes accompanied by a mnuscript Haywood, Cal Sept 3 postmark (ALA-2070). The cover was mailed to Templeton, Massachusetts, and received there Oct. 15, 1862 according to the manuscript note on the reverse.

The town, which today is known as Hayward, was originally named Hayward's, but was changed to Haywood in 1860 in conjunction with the opening of a Post Office.  In 1876, the name was again changed to Haywards following town's charter by the state of California. And, then in 1910 the "s" was dropped and the name became simply Hayward.

Like so many early California towns, Haywood is believed to have been named Hayward after William D. Hayward, who opened a hotel there in 1852.

The scarcity index for puts the auction value for the cover between $100 and $150, although the auction it most recently sold in netted $160. Generally, a nice tidy cover. Please study the images to determine condition as well as clarity, color, condition, cancel, and centering. Note, the reverse features pencil notations from a previous collector in the reverse lower left corner, "HYEX-81."
