Item Description
This is a very nice fully struck Canastota, New York, "bee" fancy cancellation on the cut square of a stamped envelope. The cut square, which cut a little too closely, is not the object of the sale, rather the eye-catching custom-designed local cancellation is the greater rarity. In Michel Zareski's 1951, second edition reference, "19th Century United States Fancy Cancels," section "Pictorials" the cancel is identified as #77, struck in black, and originating in Canastota. Zareski put an on-piece strike value at $6.75 in 1951 and using an economics calculator that would be just over $70.00 today (end of 2021).
In Herst-Sampson 1963 work, "19th Century United States Fancy Cancellations," 3rd edition, the image of the cancellation differs somewhat, but confirms the Canastota origin and strike coloration. Herst-Sampson identify the cancel as #1384. Herst-Sampson put the cancellation value at $10.oo to $20.oo in 1963 and using an economics calculator that would be just over $88.oo to $176.5o today (end of 2021).
In Skinner-Eno's 1980 volume, "United States Cancellations 1845-1869," the strike seems to better match-up with Zareski's and is identified as PA-I 38. All three references confirm the first use of the cancellation as occurring in 1869. The standard for reference made no mention of valuation. And as with all collectibles, the market really determines the value.
Please review the image of this philatelic cancellation on-cut square. A nice tidy, clean strike of an unusual 19th Century custom-designed local cancellation with very fresh philatelic qualities. Please study the image to determine condition as well as clarity, color, condition, cancel, and centering.
