Item Description

This is a choice piece California postal history for the specialist looking for the more scarce items. The "Western, Cal Oct. 28, 1854" manuscript postmarked (SAC-3650) cover features a manuscript "Paid 6" for the mailing to Port Gibson, New York. The Western, California, Post Office was only in operation from May 1854 to April 1856. There are only two or three covers known to exist with this postal marking from California's Sacramento County; ex Tatham collection. Previous auction house link available on request.

The cover is fresh and clean although there are a corners show some wear and the lower right corner seems snipped. There is obvious reverse flap damage presumeably from Mary Baker's excitement to hear from a loved one or friend probably in California searching for gold. (Miss Baker is the original recipient, but why the sender was in California is really anyone's guess.)
