Item Description

A Civil War Era cover, this Anderson (Mendocino County) CAL cover features manuscript postmarking ANDERSON CAL Jan 25th 1865 to Fairfield County, Connecticut. In January 1865, the U.S. Congress was still trying to get the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery passed, while the fighting in the Southern rebel states continued. The cover is/was franked with an 1861 3-cent Washington issue cancelled with a fancy curly que pen stroke. 

The Anderson Post Office was in operation from 1858 to 1875 in what is/was known as Anderson Valley, which was named for 1851 settler Walter Anderson. Yet despite its nearly 17 year history, there is only a single postmark stamped recorded cover, while most are manuscript just as here.

This, the manuscript cover for sale here, is a nice piece California postal history and in really nice condition.  The cover has great eye appeal. Please study the images to determine condition as well as clarity, color, condition, cancel, and centering.
