Item Description
This auction is for a Feb. 1, 1945 first day cancelled Postal Note stamp card (complete) with two individual Postal Note stamps adhered and cancelled in Washington, D.C., and initialed by Postmaster Vincent Burke. The card is in great shape: looks sturdy as a punch card of days long passed. The stamps are superb and completely adhered to the card and tied to it with the appropriate cancel stirke.Postal Note stamps were only sold between Feb. 1, 1945, and March 31, 1951, when they were discontinued by the U.S. Postal Department. The cards were sold in denominations ranging from 0 dollars to $10.00, which was the highest allowed to be sold. While there was a ceiling for the card denomination, there was no limit to the number of cards a person could purchase. The stamps ranged from a penny to 90-cents and were to be placed on a card. At the time, it was considered a safe, convenient means of sending money through the mail. The cards were a nickle each and sold only in the contiguous 48 states. And, they were available at only 1,800 Post Offices nationwide.
Please study the scans to determine condition and usage, before bidding.
