Item Description
This is the Bridgeport to Wilton, Connecticut, postal history cover and correspondence now available for sale. The cover is franked with a Scott #10A and postmarked "BRIDGEPORT CT OCT 20" CDS cancellation tying the stamp to the cover. While the correspondence is difficult to read, both the note from the reverend to the doctor (accompanying original cover) and the doctor's reply are presented here. The men at the heart of this philatelic history are none other than Rev. Nathanial Hewit and physician Dr. David Willard of Wilton, Connecticut. The original recipient, Dr. Willard was a practicing physician in Wilton, but was born in 1789 in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. He must have enjoyed the practice and people of Wilton, because he remained in the hamlet until his death Feb. 9, 1860 -- just four days after his 71st birthday. He and his family are buried in Wilton's Hillside Cemetery.
The initial writer was Bridgeport's well respected Reverend Nathanial Hewit, D.D. Hewit petitioned the New York Presbytery for denominational acceptance in 1853 and subsequently became -- by a unanimous vote of the congregation -- the first pastor of what today is the First Presbyterian Church of Fairfield. Under his guidance, the church grew a substantial footprint in the town having a spire that was the tallest of a church there in the 1850's. Reverend Hewit, held in such high regard by his parishioners, tried to resign the pulit in 1858 due to health concerns, but utlimately remained at the pulpit with some assistance through mid-1862.
This tidy little cover bares an early usage of Scott #10A, but does have a manuscript notation of of Oct 1852 which supports the correspondence pieces dated Oct. 19 nd Oct. 20, 1852. Please study the images for clarity, color, condition, cancellations, stamp, and postal markings.
