Item Description

Nice 1851 "Ladies" cover posted from Williamsport, Penn., to Syracuse, New York, franked with the then "new" American imperforate 3-cent stamp featuring the portrait of George Washington, which is now available for sale. These early U.S. stamps were printed with exceptionally narrow margins, and this is a well cut apart and bares a nice blue SEP 24 WILLIAMSPORT PA (Pennsylvania) CDS cancellation. This cover, which has long since lost the reverse flap, is addressed to a woman in Syracuse, New York.

The stamp is the orange brown Type II after verification with valid colorguides. It is an exceptional stamp and a nicely preserved cover given the tight production processes of the mid-19th century.
