CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA: Two DIETZ DIE PROOFS, roughly 3.5" x 5.5" (full size); (for Scott #11-12), shows details of the differences between the two stamps, couple tiny bumps but in a great state of preservation, much better than usually encountered. VF

Don't be fooled by copies of these proofs. These are the genuine items. Not photos or photocopies but the actual August Dietz proofs. Ca 1918-1930.

In 1901, August Dietz formed the Dietz Printing Company (later the Southern Publishing Company). It was both a business and a pleasure for him. When he began work on The Postal Service of the Confederate States of America, in 1918 (and later, other works), he soon decided a little financial help was in order. So, both to finance and to publicize his work, Dietz used his printing skills to issue something we call today the Dietz Die Proofs. Dietz called them Fac-simile Die Proofs. These were large size reproductions (150%) of Confederate stamps printed on cards. However, Die Proofs were a bit of a misnomer, as they weren’t from dies and they weren’t proofs of anything at all. Still, the detail and quality of these cards is so high we can still appreciate their beauty today and they are quite useful for weeding out forgeries and recognizing identifying features on the general issue stamps. You see these from time to time on Hip, but they have become much scarcer in the last few years.
